The functions are easy to use and understand. The software, although limited in advanced functionality, is easy to use and easily navigated without the instruction manual for most intermediate to advanced users. Printing is great. Print jobs are spooled and printed quickly and the quality is just as good as any other monochrome laser printer on the market. I had issues with the unit after initial installation with the scanning and copying from the automatic feed tray on the top. The scans were slanted. A few minor adjustments to the unit proved successful. Scanning and copying quality is good enough for the home user. For someone who needs to do photo-realistic scans, then maybe this is not for you. The unit itself is not too bulky, but it should be placed on a piece of furniture other than your desk, unless you have a really big desk. Structurally, it is a little flimsy in some areas, but not too much. It is fairly solid throughout. I would have liked to have some type of support for the manual feed tray above the main paper tray, but it works okay without one. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this multi-function is twice as nice as my last Brother printer, which I loved. I couldn't be more impressed with this unit. I can't find much, if anything at all to criticize about this multi-function. It's extremely intuitive, user-friendly. I had this machine set up in less than 5 minutes and it's been used continuously ever since. There's no learning curve; it just goes to work. That says alot for a machine that does this much. My machines receive heavy use. In total, I print, scan, and fax a couple hundred times a day, and often print dozens of pages at one sitting. This machine faxes, scans and prints faster than any machine I've owned before. Print and fax quality are excellent. Buttons, trays and internal access are easy to access and understand. It's not the quietest printer because it prints so vigorously, but I'll trade that slight difference for this sharp increase in performance any day. Also, forcing the envelope to make a u-turn in the machine usually results in wrinkled envelopes. I much preferred the rear feeding tray in the DCP-1000 model, which was also used as the manual feed.
